Mickey Lynn Burney, 52, of Whitney, died Monday at a Waco hospital after a head-on crash between his pickup truck and an 18-wheeler east of Aquilla in Hill County.

The accident was reported at around 8:15 a.m. Monday on FM 1304.

Burney was eastbound on the road in a 2002 Ford Ranger pickup truck when he drove into the path of a westbound 2016 Volvo tractor-trailer on a curve, Department of Public Safety Sgt. D.L. Wilson said.

Burney and the driver of the big rig, Dexter Thomas Deel, 29, of Euless, were both taken to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center where Burney died shortly after arrival, Wilson said.

Deel remained in the hospital Monday evening with what Wilson described as non-life-threatening injuries.
