A Waco jury sentenced a man to life in prison and fined him $10,000 Friday--the maximum penalty for the offense-- after convicting him of aggravated sexual assault of a child.

Damien Rayshawn Betters, 36, was arrested on March 17, 2016 in connection with a 2012 incident that involved a girl who was 8 at the time.

The assault happened when the child was living with her family at a North Waco-area home and the girl and her attacker were acquainted.

"We would like to thank all of the survivors that were part of bringing this man to justice. We are glad to know that our community has been made safer by the decision of the jury and our survivor's bravery,” prosecutors Ryan Bownds and Sydney Tuggle said in a statement after the jury returned the sentence.

Betters has been held in the McLennan County Jail in lieu of $75,000 bond since his arrest.
