Copperas Cove: Hit-and-run victim's friends petition for road changes
After the death of William Ames in a hit-and-run accident on Jan. 13, his close friends and family brought a petition to city council for more safety additions to Urbantke Lane and other roads Tuesday.
The petition calls for more stop signs, speed bumps, lights and sidewalks.
The petition also calls for the speed limit on Urbantke to be lowered. It currently is 30 mph.
Mark Weir, a close friend of Ames, says he will not stop until it is safe for residents to walk on Urbantke Lane.
"I'm just gonna have to be on their toes like a thorn in the side," he said.
"I have to be an advocate for the city. This needs to change and these roads need to change."
Now that city council has received the petition, they will decide whether or not to take action.
At this time, there is no timeline for the decision or how it will lean.
