Some Bellmead residents were evacuated Thursday morning as local firefighters battled a brush fire that threatened homes and burned to within just feet of a natural gas line.

The fire broke out just before 10 a.m. Thursday in a utility building in the 4600 block of Bellmead Drive and the flames spread to surrounding foliage.

Crews from Bellmead, Lacy-Lakeview and Waco joined forces to battle the fire as it spread toward mobile homes in the 700 block of Petty Place.

The fire burned to within two feet of a natural gas line.

Residents were advised just before noon they could return to their homes.

The shed in which the fire started was a total loss.

The cause is under investigation.
