Crews were responding early Wednesday afternoon to an 18-wheeler fire on Interstate 35 just north of Waco.

The truck was burning on the northbound side of the highway at Behren’s Circle in Bellmead.

The driver of the McLane truck apparently pulled into the highway median when the rig's cab caught fire and then escaped safely.

The cab was destroyed and the trailer was charred.

Authorities diverted northbound traffic off the highway and onto the access road while firefighters doused the flame, but just before 1:30 p.m. one lane was reopened to traffic.

At one point, traffic was backed up to 18th Street in Waco.

A Texas Department of Transportation traffic camera showed a large cloud of black smoke rising from the burning rig, which was just across from the Walmart store on the east side of the highway.

Further details weren’t immediately available.
