A critically injured 8-year-old girl and four other people were taken to a local hospital Friday afternoon following a two-vehicle crash at a rural highway intersection.
The girl was flown by helicopter to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center in critical condition after the crash, which happened at around 2 p.m. Friday at the intersection of State Highway 31 and FM 939 northeast of Axtell.
Investigators determined that the driver of a Chevrolet SUV that was southbound on FM 939 ran a stop sign, Department of Public Safety Sgt. Ryan Howard said in a press release.
An eastbound Ford passenger car struck the SUV in the intersection, Howard said.
The driver of the car and the driver of the SUV and two passengers were taken to Hillcrest by ambulance.
The 8-year-old girl was also a passenger in the SUV.
