Duncan Hines cake mixes recalled over salmonella concerns

(KWTX) Conagra Brands is recalling 2.4 million boxes of Duncan Hines cake mixes after a positive finding of salmonella in a retail sample of the company’s Classic White cake mix that may be linked to a salmonella outbreak that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating.

The voluntary recall includes not only Duncan Hines Classic White cake mix, but also its Classic Butter, Golden, Signature Confetti and Classic Yellow cake mixes, which were produced during the same period.

“While it has not been definitively concluded that this product is linked to the outbreak and the investigation is still ongoing,” the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said, the company is voluntarily recalling the products out of an abundance of caution.

Five instances of illness caused by salmonella are being investigated.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children and frail or elderly people, as well as those with weakened immune systems.

Infection can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
