Ex-cop convicted of killing unarmed neighbor now in local prison unit

GATESVILLE, Texas (KWTX) A former Dallas police officer convicted of murder in the shooting death of her neighbor, whom she killed after mistakenly entering his apartment, was held Monday in the Mountain View state prison unit in Gatesville, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice confirmed Monday.

Amber Guyger, 31, was transferred to the unit early Friday morning and was placed in protective custody sources with knowledge of her situation told KWTX.

Guyger was sentenced to 10 years in prison last Wednesday afternoon after jurors in Dallas convicted her of murder the day before in the September 2018 killing of Botham Jean, 26.

Guyger could have been sentenced from five to 99 years or life in prison.

The 44-year-old Mountain View unit on Ransom Road four miles north of Gatesville has the capacity to house 645 female offenders.
