Fight over backpack leaves Central Texas man dead

HILLSBORO, Texas (KWTX) Hillsboro police were investigating Tuesday after an early morning fight over a backpack resulted in a man’s stabbing death.

Police, fire and rescue units responded at around 2:20 a.m. Tuesday to a report that a man was lying near the corner of Walnut and Waco streets in Hillsboro, police said.

First responders found Glendaryl Montgomery, 21, of Hillsboro, lying in the street, with a stab wound.

Montgomery was taken by ambulance to Hill Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 2:45 a.m., police said.

At about 6:45 a.m. police arrested a 25-year-old suspect in the 1000 block of Old Bynum Road.

Hillsboro DPS has identified the suspect as Gregory Michael Mason, Jr.

Mason was arraigned at approximately 3:40 p.m. on charges of murder and tampering with physical evidence related to the case.

Mason was also charged with criminal trespassing on an unrelated offense.

Judge J. Milburn set Mason’s total bond at $1,010,000.

He remains in custody at the Hillsboro Police Department.
