Crews battled a fire Friday evening that broke out in a hopper at the Cargill Animal Nutrition & Health facility at 251 Berger Rd. in Temple.

The 15 workers at the facility escaped without injury.

Firefighters responded at around 5:20 p.m. Friday and the fire was declared under control at 6:43 p.m.

More than two-dozen firefighters from Temple and Troy responded to the plant along with police and paramedics.

The company announced on Nov. 1 it had opened a $34 million expansion of the facility.

Work on the 70,000-square-foot addition started in January 2018 and was completed in August 2019.

The facility, which employs 26, has the capacity to produce nearly 500,000 tons of bag and bulk animal feed a year.
