WACO, Texas (KWTX) A veteran Waco firefighter who responded after an elderly area resident fell victim to heat exhaustion while mowing his lawn stuck around to finish the job.

Lt. Mike Herbert was part of the crew that responded at around 11 a.m. Tuesday after the unidentified man became overheated while mowing the lawn at a home off Speegleville Road.

The man was only about a quarter done with the task, Herbert said.

“As we were finishing up with taking care of the patient, I figured ‘you know what I need to go help him’ so I went and started the lawn mower back up. I thought it be a good deed because I knew it was something he didn’t need to be doing for a while,” Herbert said.

A fellow firefighter snapped a photo of the 26-year Waco Fire Department veteran.

The job took about 30 minutes, he said, and the homeowner, whose name and condition weren’t available will return home to a well-manicured yard.

“I didn’t do it with any intention of appreciation, I did it because the guy was in no condition to do it himself and I would want someone to help me if I needed that kind of help,” Herbert said.
