Flags were flying at half-staff Wednesday in Central Texas and around the U.S. in honor of law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
In 1962 President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which the day falls as National Police Week.
Law enforcement agencies throughout Central Texas observe the week and a national memorial service, which started in 1982, draws thousands of law enforcement officers and the families of fallen officers.
The McLennan County Peace Officer Memorial is at 11 a.m. Thursday at Indian Spring Park.
Gov. Greg Abbott issued a proclamation encouraging residents to honor those "who for our sake, laid down their lives."
"It is crucial that we recognize the significant risks taken by all law enforcement officers, from peace officers to corrections and detentions officers," he said.
"They deserve our support and respect.'
