Temple: Former TV news anchor to file to run for vacant city council seat

KWTX learned Tuesday that Anthony “Tony” Hennes, a well-known former KCEN-TV news anchor, plans to announce his candidacy Thursday for the Dist. 4 seat on the Temple City Council.

Former Dist. 4 Temple City Councilman Michael Pilkington's resigned abruptly on Jan. 14, days after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor deadly conduct charge in Corpus Christi, court records show.

Under Temple's City Charter, the council may fill a vacancy if there is a year or less left on the unexpired term.

Pilkington was elected to represent Dist. 4 in May of 2016 and would have been up for re-election in May.

Hennes, 72, also spent 10 years working for the City of Temple as public information officer, serving as the spokesman for both the mayor and council.

Hennes first made his intentions known on his Facebook page Monday evening.

“I will be announcing my candidacy for the Temple City Council District 4 seat at a news conference in the council chambers at 10 a.m. Thursday morning. Thank you for your encouragement,” his message reads.
