KEMPNER, Texas (KWTX) Four teenagers were in custody Friday night in connection with the death of a Kempner man who was gunned down in front of his own home in September 2019.

Vance Helzer, 24, was shot at around 11:20 p.m. Sept. 16, 2019 in front of his home in the 400 block of Pecos Lane in Kempner.

Matthew Isaiah Lawson, 18, Markevious Rayshun Myers, 19, Kashawn Anton-James Ratliff, 19, and Javier Kristian Gutierrez, 18, have been charged with murder, Lampasas County Sheriff Jess Ramos said in a press release Friday night.

“A follow-up investigation revealed that Helzer was in a dispute over money and the four suspects drove to Helzer’s residence to confront him,” Ramos said.

“Helzer was immediately shot within seconds of the arrival of the suspects,” who fled after the shooting, Ramos said.

Texas Rangers are assisting the Lampasas County Sheriff's Office in the homicide investigation and arrests are expected soon.

Lampasas, Copperas Cove and Killeen police assisted in the investigation along with the Milam and Coryell County sheriff’s offices, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Texas Rangers and the U.S. Marshals Service.
