Fugitive wanted for mother’s murder could be in Central Texas

Richard V. Merritt, a fugitive wanted for the murder of his mother may pass through Central Texas on his way to Mexico or may have family in the area, the U.S. Marshals Service said Thursday.

He should be considered armed and dangerous, authorities said.

Merritt, a disbarred attorney, was supposed to surrender on Feb. 1 after he was sentenced to 30 years in prison in Cobb County, Ga., following his conviction for stealing money from clients and elder abuse, authorities said.

His elderly mother was found dead on Feb. 2 in DeKalb County, Ga., authorities said.

Her 2009 silver Lexus RX350 was missing, but Merritt’s vehicle was found at the scene.

He has been ordered to wear an ankle monitor, but removed it before he disappeared.

Merritt may be driving the Lexus, which has Georgia license CBV 6004.

He may have shaved his head or taken other steps to change his appearance, authorities said.
