Waco: Funeral held for revered coach
A funeral was held for longtime Waco University high school soccer coach Mike Chapman, Saturday afternoon at Waco ISD Stadium.
Chapman died of an apparent heart attack after he collapsed by the school's field house on the way to his truck following the varsity boy's tie-game against La Vega.
"I can’t even describe how special he was," says Chapman's nephew Dylan Chapman.
Coach Mike Chapman had many successes as the boys and girls soccer coach, his greatest accomplishment being the 2013 Boys State Title.
However, Chapman's legacy will be so much more.
He made sure his soccer teams knew the importance of serving their community by creating programs like 'Make a Wish Come True' which provided gifts to local students in need each Christmas.
"He didn’t have kids in his personal life, but every single one of them was his kids," says his nephew Dylan.
"I can’t even describe how much he loved them," he said.
At his funeral Saturday, students from both the girls and the boys soccer team shared lessons he taught them.
"He always taught us to give back to those who aren't as fortunate," says one of Chapman's players Ivan Herrera.
It was announced at the funeral that Waco city council will honor Chapman with a proclamation at their meeting Tuesday, January 21st at 6 pm.
