BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) The Pittsburgh Pirates have a 57-year-old participating at spring training.

It's Garth Brooks.

He reported Monday with pitchers and catchers in Bradenton, Fla.

The rest of the team did not know until Brooks showed up. Brooks took ground balls at third base and fly balls in the outfield.

He'll spend a week with the team. Brooks jokes that he uses his celebrity to his advantage.

He says he hasn't got speed, fielding, or hitting, but he can crowd the plate because nobody wants to hit him.

Brooks made the appearance to mark the 20th anniversary of the Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundation, which raises money for children's charities.

He had been in training camps with the Padres in 1999, the Mets in 2000, and the Royals in 2004.
