A 9-year-old girl who was struck by a van as she crossed a road late Friday afternoon southwest of Hewitt was taken to a local hospital with what authorities said were minor injuries.

The girl, a third grade student at Lorena Elementary School, was crossing old Lorena Road near Spring Valley Road at around 4:40 p.m. Friday when the northbound Honda Van struck her, Department of Public Safety Sgt. Ryan Howard said.

The van’s driver wasn’t injured, he said.

No charges have been filed.

A witness told KWTX that a Lorena ISD bus was at the scene of the accident, but it wasn’t clear whether the girl had been riding on it before she was struck.

Lorena ISD Superintendent Joe Kucera issued a brief statement confirming the girl is a student.

"We are staying in contact with the family to monitor the condition of the student," he said.
