On August 25, 2017—two years ago today--Hurricane Harvey made landfall at around 10 p.m. at Rockport as a Category 4 storm with 130 mile per hour sustained winds, the strongest hurricane to hit Texas since Carla swept ashore near Rockport in 1961, leading to days of downpours that dumped more than 50 inches of rain on some areas. Harvey claimed more than 100 lives in the U.S. and damaged or destroyed about 200,000 homes as the storm system flooded much of Houston and smaller coastal communities. Harvey made landfall three times in six days and affected about 13 million people from Texas through Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Kentucky. Total damage from the storm was estimated at $125 billion.

On August 25, 1999, the FBI, reversing itself after six years, admitted that its agents might have fired some potentially flammable tear gas canisters on the final day of the 1993 standoff with the Branch Davidians outside of Waco, but said it continued to believe law enforcement agents did not start the deadly fire, which engulfed the cult's compound.
On August 25, 2016, a blood-covered man who told authorities he had killed his wife briefly barricaded himself with his two young children Thursday inside a trailer at a mobile home park in the 4300 block of Concord Road in Bellmead. David Dauzat, 23, was arrested after a brief standoff and charged with murder. His wife, Natasha Dauzat, 21, was beheaded and her head was placed in the refrigerator.
