A Waco man and woman were jailed after police say they ran from police after an attempted traffic stop early Thursday.

Santana Carlos Pesina, 26, was charged with evading arrest, evading arrest in a motor vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of marijuana.

Amanda Gatlin, 28, was charged with evading arrest.

They were arrested after an officer tried to pull over a 2007 Ford Escape with expired registration at around 1:40 a.m. Thursday.

The driver didn’t stop, but instead pulled into the parking lot of the Hewitt Walmart store where the SUV rammed into a cement pole, Hewitt police said.

The driver and his passenger both tried to run, Assistant Police Chief Tuck Saunders said.

Officers captured the woman fairly quickly, he said, but the man jumped over a fence into a drainage ditch where he tried to hide in a drainage tube.

"They found him and arrested him," said Saunders.

"They also found drugs in the vehicle, that's why they took off."

Both Pesina and Gatlin remained jailed Thursday evening.

Their bonds had not yet been set.
