I-35 shut down as crews remove sign damaged in crash

ABBOTT, Texas (KWTX) A stretch of Interstate 35 was closed in both directions Tuesday afternoon north of Abbott in Hill County while crews removed an electronic sign that was damaged in a crash.

Southbound traffic was backed up for about two miles and northbound traffic by about 3 ½ miles at around 2 p.m. Tuesday and the work was expected to take about two hours to complete.

By 3:15 p.m. the southbound lanes were open again, but traffic was backed up for three miles and the northbound backup was about four miles.

The crash scene wasn't cleared until around 6:30 p.m.

The Texas Department of Transportation was advising motorists to use alternate routes.
