An “incident” Tuesday afternoon involving the Cameron Park Zoo’s male white-tailed deer and collared peccary left the two collared peccary dead, the zoo said in a Facebook post.
“Staff responded immediately to diffuse the situation and to come to the aid of the animals in distress,” the post said.
“Unfortunately efforts to save them were unsuccessful.”
The deer and the peccary had been exhibited together successfully for the past year.
The zoo said it was first such incident to occur at the zoo.
The post did not include details of what happened.
“We appreciate your kind thoughts as staff mourns the loss of these animals that they cared deeply for,” the zoo said.
