KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) Jurors returned a guilty verdict Friday afternoon in Belton in the murder trial of Santiago Vasquez, 86, of Killeen, who’s accused of shooting his 80-year-old neighbor to death in 2017.
Deliberations started at around 10:15 a.m. and the jury returned with the verdict at around 3 p.m.
Sentencing is set for July 11.
The shooting that claimed the life of John Wesley Seth, Jr., of Killeen was the result of a dispute that had simmered for years, police said at the time.
The shooting, which was reported at around 3:10 p.m. on May 30, 2017 in the 600 block of Bream Circle off Fishpond Lane near Ellison High School, stemmed from an argument that turned physical.
A witness told an investigator that Vasquez knocked Seth to the ground when he struck him twice with his cane and then, after Seth got up, shot him three times, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
Officers found Seth’s body in the street on Fishpond.
Vasquez was arrested at the scene.
Seth died of gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen.
