KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX): Project Hero rolled its way into Central Wednesday as veterans travel from Austin to the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Riders on the therapeutic bike tour were greeted in Killeen with a free meal.

Project Hero is a national nonprofit organization that helps veterans and first responders affected by injury, post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injuries.

The ride helps them achieve rehabilitation, recovery and resilience in their everyday lives.

Aubrey Gaines is a former combat medic who retired from Fort Hood.

This was his first Project Hero ride.

“It's not just a lot of veterans getting together to ride, there is a big huge part on the ride to recovery and that these guys are focusing on,” he said.

“I was the new guy in, most of these guys have done three or four and within hours I felt like part of the family.”

A welcome ceremony is planned Thursday at Fort Hood.
