Killeen: Kites fly high during Peaceable Kingdom event
Variety's Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children Hosted their 6th annual Kites for Kids event Saturday afternoon.
The non-profit was founded in 1984 and empowers children with special needs in Central Texas.
Members of the non-profit opened their campgrounds to the community for the free event.
Children and their families enjoyed kite-flying, food trucks and games.
They also participated in coloring and kite-flying contests.
Little ones got a chance to ride in the barrow train and also see a demonstration from the Killeen Police Department K-9 unit and a Texas roller derby team.
Michelle Adler is the camp director.
She says the event gives the community a chance to know the non-profit a little better.
"We are kind of the best-kept secret in Bell County," Adler said.
"This is a really great way for us to open up the retreat grounds and help share about what we do to empower kids with special needs in our area."
Adler says the camp is always looking for volunteers.
She encourages anyone interested to contact them.
