KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) More than 100 Killeen ISD students were able to get a new desk Thursday thanks to the generous donation of a local business.
For many students, doing their homework on the floor or while in bed is a reality. With a brand new desk – with storage space – they have a new place to study.
The donations were made possible by Jorge Lastiri, owner at Great American Conny’s Treasures in Killeen.
”It’s important for us to give back to the community. God has been so good to us, good business. That’s why we’re trying to give back to the community in different ways,” he said.
Devora Gonzales, a parent of a 5-year-old, was able to get a new desk for her daughter.
”It’s very thoughtful of him to do that for students,” she said.
Her daughter was among 150 Peebles Elementary students to receive a free desk.
”It helps them concentrate better when you’re sitting next to them at a desk, instead of on the couch or the kitchen table,” Gonzales said.
These kids, smiling from ear to ear, were waiting all week to get their new desks, school officials said. Their parents were also happy about it, too.
”Had moms call me and say, ‘I can’t believe that someone is giving my family such a blessing. Now my child can get off the floor doing his homework and now he can have a real space to work,’” said school counselor Judy Hughes.
Killeen ISD says 89 percent of students at Peebles Elementary are economically disadvantaged – making the generous donation from Lastiri that much more special. Peebles is one of three schools in the district he has donated to including Bellaire and Brookhaven.
”He’s not only saying I believe in kids, but I’m going to do it tangibly. I’m going to show I believe in you by giving you a place you can sit and focus on your academics. It’s mind blowing,” Principal Carol Correa said.
Lastiri says he has plans to donate more desks to Killeen ISD students in the coming months.
