Driver arrested in hit-and-run that left Central Texas man dead

KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) A 30-year-old man has been arrested after police say he was behind the wheel of a vehicle that hit a pedestrian and fled the scene.

Michael David Olivas is accused of hitting 53-year-old Michael Dean Cook in the 1000 block of Jasper Road on Dec. 21.

Police say Olivas fled the scene, leaving Cook to die on the street. Cook was crossing southbound when he was fatally struck, police said.

Investigators were able to locate the vehicle, a light-colored 2000-2006 Chevy Tahoe, days later in Killeen.

According to Killeen police, Olivas turned himself in Saturday after a complaint was issued Friday.

He is charged with accident causing death and is the Bell County Jail on $500,000 bond.
