KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) A couple of Killeen business owners are giving kids healthier food options, and they're doing it for free!

The owners of Grabbagreen in Killeen are launching a "Free Fruit for Kids" program where anyone under eighteen can walk right in and pick an apple, banana, orange or seasonal fruit at no cost.

Lisa Kelly and Doni Engel hope that by making fresh fruit more accessible, kids will make healthier decisions.

"We want them to know that it is just that quick and easy and delicious to grab a piece of fruit as it is to grab a bag of chips or to grab a candy bar," says Kelly.

"It can make them feel better about their day, and hopefully they see that they feel better eating something better," she adds.

A launch party for the program will be held Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at 2802 W Stan Schlueter Loop.

There will be giveaways and each child in attendance will get their own "Free Fruit For Kids" ID card.

The owners are also planning to launch a "Dirt to Table" program in the spring to help kids learn how food is grown and harvested through a community garden.
