LACY LAKEVIEW, Texas (KWTX) Lacy Lakeview police have arrested a man who allegedly threatened his girlfriend with a gun and hatchet as he held her captive.

Darus Lomunt Oates, 43, is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated kidnapping, assault family violence by impeding breath, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.

Oates was facing additional charges for outstanding warrants which included failure to pay child support, two counts possession of drug paraphernalia, and having an open container in a motor vehicle, according to jail records.

He remained jailed Tuesday in lieu of bonds totaling $173,000.

According to LLPD Chief John Truehitt, after being held against her will for about eight hours in a trailer home in the 1000 block of E. Crest Dr. Sunday, the suspect's girlfriend managed to escape while he was sleeping and ran to a nearby Valero to call 911.

She told police Oates had choked her during a fight and had threatened her with a gun and a hatchet, Truehitt said.

"After 32 years, I still don't understand why people stay in these relationships thinking that it's going to get better...it's never going to get better until one of them ends up in jail, or the morgue, or both," Truehitt told KWTX.
