Lady Bears visit the Oval Office

The national champion Lady Bears joined President Donald Trump Monday afternoon for cheeseburgers and a private audience in the Oval Office.

The team was joined by Vice President Mike Pence, U.S. Rep. Bill Flores, R-Bryan, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, Baylor President Linda Livingstone and Athletic Director Mack Rhoades.

Team members were served fast food from Wendy's, McDonald's and Burger King in the State Dining Room, just as other sports teams were on their visits.

Coach Kim Mulkey gave the president some gifts including a signed basketball, a championship cap and a team jersey displaying No. 1, which she suggested might look better on First Lady Melania Trump after Mr. Trump joked that the sleeveless jersey would let him show off his "toned arms."

Earlier Monday, the team returned to the U.S. Capitol to visit with members of the Texas delegation including U.S. Sen. John Cornyn and U.S. Rep. Collin Allred of Dallas, a former Baylor football player.

The team was headed back to Waco late Monday afternoon.

The Baylor Lady Bears spent Sunday sightseeing in the nation's capital ahead of their scheduled visit with President Trump at the White House Monday afternoon.

Members of the team visited the Jefferson Memorial, Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial.

The team also toured the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

The group ended the day by being welcomed to the U.S. Capitol building by former Democratic Central Texas Congressman Chet Edwards.

Edwards, who splits his time between working in D.C. and teaching at Baylor, helped lead the tour that included an insider's look at the capital, including the house chamber.

This is the first trip to Washington, D.C., for several of the players on the team, including Lauren Cox who told KWTX it was amazing to see so much history in one place.

The Lady Bears also visited the White house under the Bush and Obama Administrations after their national championships in 2005 and 2012.
