A Bell County jury Thursday returned a guilty verdict in the capital murder trial of a man charged in a deadly 2016 home invasion.

Prosecutors weren't seeking the death penalty in the trial of Quentorius Tramaine Simmons, 32, of Hewitt, who was automatically sentenced to life in prison without parole.

He was indicted in May 2018 in the death of Maurice Smith, Jr., 31, of Temple.

Smith was shot to death after two intruders broke into his home at around 11:45 p.m. on Dec. 12, 2016, in the 1200 block of South 10th Street in Temple.

He was taken to Scott & White Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
