Local child sexual assault defendant fails to show up for court

WACO, Texas (KWTX) A defendant in a crimes against children trial involving sexual assaults and indecency with children failed to show up for court Tuesday and authorities are now searching for him.

Judge Ralph Strother, in 19th District Court forfeited the $150,000 bond for Anubis David Mendez, 38, and issued a bench warrant for his arrest.

Mendez’s attorney says he doesn’t know where his client is and neither does Mendez’s family.

Records show Mendez is not a U.S. Citizen.

Nine felony counts await Mendez, who, if found guilty, could be sentenced to 25 years to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The charges include continuous sexual abuse of a child, three counts of sexual assault of a child and five counts of indecency with a child.
