BRYAN, Texas (KWTX) The Bryan Police Department is mourning the loss of former officer George Aguilar, who died after battling cancer.

"George Aguilar was a silent yet a strong leader in the department and he will be greatly missed," the department said.

Aguilar started with the Bryan Police Department in July 1980.

He served as a patrol officer and later as a detective.

Aguilar retired in 2015 after more than 34 years of service to his community.

"Officer Aguilar worked with so many kids at Lamar and Bryan High Schools as a School Resource and K9 Officer," the department said.

"He was instrumental in helping start the Camp PAL program in 1994. This program was attended by hundreds of children."
