Students and players gathered in Axtell Saturday afternoon to remember beloved head baseball coach Cameron Bankston who was killed in a single vehicle accident Thursday night in Huckabay, Texas while visiting friends.

The gathering happened at the Axtell baseball field where players, whose season was suspended this year because of the coronavirus, gathered around their vehicles and one-by-one talked about how the coach had impacted their lives.

Many also left behind flowers and notes where a memorial had started to form for the first year Axtell head coach.

Axtell Independent School District Superintendent Dr. J.R. Proctor posted the following message on the school district's page:

"It is with the heaviest of hearts that I announce the passing of our beloved coach Cameron Bankston."

"Last night Coach Bankston passed away in a single vehicle accident in Huckabay, Texas, while visiting friends."

"Coach Bankston came to Axtell just a single year ago, and had already made an unmistakable impact on our school. Please keep his family and loved ones in your prayers."

The Hamilton Independent School District said Banskton was a former teacher and head baseball coach at Hamilton High School from 2015-18.

"It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of former baseball coach Cameron Bankston," the district said on its athletics department Facebook page.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Coach Bankston's family and the students and faculty at Axtell ISD."

Bankston played baseball at Abilene Christian University and was also a longtime player and coach for the Dallas Tigers Baseball Club.

The Dallas Tigers posted "Cameron was the leader of a very talented Tiger team for over 6 years and a huge part in several of his team’s championships. Bankston touch many kids and families that played for him. His passion for the Dallas Tigers and coaching kids was unlike anything I’ve ever been around. Loved him like a son. Pray for his mom and dad. RIP my friend. We’re gonna miss you. We love you Cameron!"

According to friends of the coach, visitation for Bankston will be May 28 from 6-8 pm at NorthPoint Church in Burleson.

The funeral will be on May 29 at 10am at the same church.

Friends say the funeral will be limited to a certain amount of people but they're waiting to confirm the size until sometime next week.
