Devonte Wright, 24, who was arrested Wednesday following a crash after leading local officers on a chase with two children in his car was in the McLennan County Jail Thursday facing a long and possibly growing list of charges.

Wright, who’s named in 18 outstanding traffic warrants, is also facing new charges including evading in a motor vehicle, evading on foot, tampering with physical evidence, two counts of abandoning or endangering a child and possession of marijuana.

Wright was driving a silver Dodge sedan Wednesday afternoon that matched the description of a vehicle linked to an incident in which shots were fired at around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Trendwoood Apartments at 1700 Dallas Circle.

An officer in the area spotted Wright’s car near the intersection of Turner Street and Lenox Street and tried to pull it over.

Wright, police say, didn’t stop, but instead led officers on a pursuit to East Waco Drive and then west across the Brazos River.

The chase ended abruptly at West Waco Drive and Novelty Street when the sedan hit a utility pole.

Police say Wright tried to run after the crash, but only covered a block before he was captured.

Marijuana was later recovered.

A front seat passenger in the car was cooperative, police say, and was later released.

Wright was taken to the McLennan County Jail.

Family members picked up the two children, who were riding in the back seat, and took them to a local hospital to be checked out.

Investigators later determined that the Dodge was not, in fact, linked to the shooting.
