Local man charged after US flags, 2 vehicles set on fire
A Belton man who's accused of “pulling 4th of July flags out of the ground and lighting them on fire” and suspected of setting two vehicles on fire, as well, was jailed Tuesday in lieu of bonds totaling $151,500, charged with arson, failure to identify and criminal mischief.
Scott Ray Smith, 34, was arrested after officers responded on June 27 to a report that a man was setting a vehicle on fire in the 2100 block of North Main Street in Belton.
Officers found a Ford F-150 with flames at the gas cap and on the ground beneath it and a Mercury Mountaineer with flames at the gas cap, according to an arrest warrant affidavit released Tuesday.
A witness told the officers that the man also pulled “4th of July flags” out of the ground and set them on fire, the affidavit says.
Police later spotted Smith walking on the I-35 frontage road and noted that he had a lighter with him, the affidavit said.
A witness identified Smith as the man who set the flags on fire, the affidavit said.
