WACO, Texas (KWTX) Some area school teachers are wasting no time this summer getting prepared for the next school year lining up by the dozens to get free school supplies from a local nonprofit.

Keep Waco Beautiful has opened a Teacher’s Closet where area educators can fill up a bag full of donated school supplies for free.

Executive Director Ashley Millerd said the group started collecting recycled donations about a year ago and just opened up the closet for shopping on Wednesday.

“We just kind of developed it,” Millerd said.

“We already go into the schools to talk about recycling projects and we were just thinking ‘what can we do that would really fulfill a need?’”

The donated supplies include everything from papers and pencils to books and games.

What Millerd never expected was the response from teachers in need of a helping hand.

Within the first few hours of inviting teachers to the closet, the social media post had been shared nearly 150 times.

The first teacher stopped by on Wednesday.

By Thursday more than 60 teachers showed up and the story was the same on Friday.

“All of the sudden it blew up,” Millerd said.

“We really feel like teachers don't get enough financially and compensated and they use a lot of their own money,” she said.

Keep Waco Beautiful says they’ll need more donated items to keep the program going strong throughout the summer.

Donations may be dropped off at 502 B Austin Ave. in Waco.

The Teacher’s Closet will be open from noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Teacher’s just need to bring identification such as a school ID, a school email address or pay stub.
