KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) Shardai Cage, 24, of Killeen, who admitted to investigators that she put her boyfriend’s clothes in a hot skillet on the stove and walked out of the couple’s apartment, according to an arrest warrant affidavit, was named in an indictment Wednesday charging arson with intent to damage habitation.
Cage remains in the Bell County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond.
Police responded to the fire at around 7:15 p.m. on Oct. 19 in an apartment in a three-story complex in the 1200 block of Bacon Ranch Road.
The glass was broken out of the back door and the back door was open, which was how firefighters found it when they arrived to extinguish the flames, which left the apartment with light to heavy smoke damage.
“There was a pan on the ground near the stove that contained burned items of clothing,” the affidavit says, and the stovetop and vent hood both were damaged by fire, the affidavit says.
The officer met with the man who lived in the apartment, who had his 8-month-old son with him.
The man said Cage started the fire after he told her he wanted to break up with her.
The man, “showed me the text messages from Facebook Messenger in which the suspect stated, ‘the apt is on fire’ and ‘you thought I was playing!!!!????’”
Cage later “admitted that she ‘cut the stove on using grease and water and got his clothes and sat them on top of the hot skillet and grabbed my purse and walked out,” the affidavit says.
