Police Friday identified a Central man who died when the van he was driving collided head-on with a church van in which five high school students and three adult leaders were riding as Mark Vanmartur, 50, of Waco.

The crash happened yesterday afternoon when the Plymouth van in which Vanmartur was driving east on Lake Shore Drive drifted into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a van belonging to the First United Methodist Church of Waco.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The five high school students and three adult leaders who were riding in the church van were taken to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center with minor injuries, police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said, but none of those riding in the van was seriously injured.

A child who was riding with Vanmartur was taken to a local hospital with what police said were non-life-threatening injuries.

The high school students and their leaders were returning to the church after spending the day at the World Hunger Relief Farm.

"The church will be working with the youth and their families in the coming days to ensure they receive the support they need," the Rev. Ryan Barnett said in a letter to church members.

Police asked residents to avoid the area.

The roadway was reopened at around 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
