WACO, Texas (KWTX) Waco police responded early Friday morning to reports of gunfire at L.L. Sams Lofts at 2000 South 1st Street near the Baylor University campus.

When they arrived at 5:30 a.m. officers heard gunfire inside an apartment, quickly secured the area and called in SWAT, police said.

SWAT team members made contact with the apartment resident, an older man, whom they took into custody without incident.

The man told police he was firing his gun inside his apartment.

Police believe he may have mental health issues.

No one was hurt, but there was property damage.

The man, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to the McLennan County Jail.

Baylor sent a campus-wide alert just after 7 a.m. advising students to avoid the area and then followed up with an all-clear message at around 7:40 a.m.
