A head-on crash between an 18-wheeler and an SUV left a teenager dead early Saturday, Department of Public Safety Sgt. John Roberts said.

Roberts said Caleb Ryan Bonde, 18, from Hot Springs, Ark., was driving a Ford Excursion southbound on US 281 just north of Lampasas around 4 a.m.

For an unknown reason, Bonde’s SUV drifted into the northbound lane of traffic and crashed head-on with a semi-truck, Roberts said.

Bonde was pronounced dead at the scene by Lampasas County J.P. Camron Brister.

The driver of the semi, Edward John Treloar, 63, was not injured, Roberts said.

DPS is investigating the crash.
