After days of heavy traffic, the Texas Department of Transportation is expecting even more delays on Interstate 35 throughout the week.

Last week's bad weather coincided with an increase in spring break travelers, all of it forcing lengthy back-ups along the interstate.

"We've had obviously a lot of rain and a lot of crashes as a result, mostly from people not slowing down," said TxDOT representative Jodi Wheatley.

While many people are returning from vacation, this week also marks the beginning of spring break for many others around Central Texas. Combined with traffic for the South by Southwest festival in Austin, it's already causing issues for drivers like Pattie Thompson.

"We thought it would just be awesome, we'd go sailing right through, but it's been real heavy," said Thompson.

For overnight drivers it won't get any better.

TxDOT is closing I-35 in the Temple area nearly every night this week, shutting both northbound and southbound lanes between Nugent Avenue and North Loop 363 for construction. Traffic will be diverted to single lanes from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. from Monday through Wednesday, and from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Thursday.

"We are recommending alternate routes," said Wheatley. "Loop 363 will be open to take if you want."

Wheatley also added that construction along Lorena, Salado, and Belton should be finished by this summer. Until then, drivers like Larell Dorrough still think it's best to avoid the interstate as much as possible.

"If you're just traveling a couple of miles, that's the best time to get on 35," said Dorrough. "Four five exits you're off, you're good."
