WACO, Texas (KWTX) The NCAA released its initial top-16 rankings among women's basketball teams, but the head coach of the No. 1 Baylor Lady Bears isn't happy with the current regional projection.
Baylor earned a No. 1 seed along with Louisville, Oregon and Mississippi State, but Lady Bears head coach Kim Mulkey hopes the NCAA changes its thought process should Baylor stick around as the top-overall seed after the Big 12 tournament.
"We got the benefit of neither geography, nor the S-curve," Mulkey said. "The other three number one seeds either got one or both."
Should teams advance past the second round of the NCAA tournament, they would play at one of four regional sites -- Chicago, Portland, Oregon, Albany, New York and Greensboro, North Carolina. The NCAA's first top-16 rankings release featured Baylor in Greensboro along with defending champion Notre Dame, Maryland and 2017 champion South Carolina.
"The good part -- I think every analyst talked about it and we agree -- is that that was not a fair bracket," Mulkey said. "Another good point is that the committee has time to get it right. The third good point is that there's a lot of basketball left to be played."
Geographically, the Ferrell Center is closer to Chicago's Wintrust Arena (1,061 miles) than Greensboro Coliseum Complex (1,157 miles). It's also the overwhelmingly-preferred option over Albany's Times Union Center (1,745 miles) and Portland's Moda Center (2,033 miles).
However, Mulkey isn't necessarily worried about location, just as long as they're assigned logical possible future opponents.
"I get that they don't know where to send us geographically," Mulkey said. "Okay, send us to Greensboro, but give us the S-curve. Don't give us the second-best two-seed who was a one-seed last week. Give us one or the other if you can. I understand that.
"That (bracket) was not a good look for women's basketball in general."
