New scam targets local sex offenders

WACO, Texas (KWTX) Waco police are warning of a new scam that targets registered sex offenders.

A scammer who represented himself as a representative of the Waco Police Department’s Office of Sex Offender Registration “called a sex offender and scammed him out of a $500 green dot card,” police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said Monday.

The scammer told the sex offender he was named in an outstanding warrant and needed $5,000 to take care of the bond, Swanton said.

“The victim was only able to scrape together $500 and gave the scammers the PIN number on the back of the card he had bought from Walgreens thus completing the scam,” Swanton said.
