Texas Rangers are investigating after a Temple police officer shot and killed a 28-year-old man Monday night.

Police identified the man Tuesday as Michael Dean.

The shooting occurred at around 8:15 p.m. Monday in the area of Southeast H K Dodgen Loop and Little River Road on the south side of the city.

“The Texas Rangers will be leading an investigation, with the assistance of the Temple Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division and Bell County District Attorney's Office,” police said in a press release Tuesday.

The officer involved in the shooting, a nine-year veteran whose name was not released, has been placed on paid leave.

The officer wasn’t injured.

The incident occurred in the area of a CEFCO store and a Tractor Supply store.

No further details have been released.

"We understand the desire from our residents and media partners to know more about the circumstances behind this officer involved shooting, police Sgt. Bryan Washko said in an afternoon update.

"However, the Texas Rangers are the leading agency in this investigation, and thus have given direction to the Temple Police Department not to release any further details," he said.
