COPPERAS COVE, Texas (KWTX) Authorities issued an alert Thursday after a raccoon that wandered into a Copperas Cove resident’s yard and lay down on the porch was found to have been rabid.
Cove animal control officers were sent on Sept. 8 to the home at 704 Barber St.
The raccoon was impounded and sent to the Texas Department of Health Laboratory for testing.
On Wednesday, the lab notified Copperas Cove officials that the raccoon was rabid.
Authorities are asking anyone who thinks they or their pets have had any contact with a raccoon or any other wild animal in the area to call Copperas Cove Animal Control at (254) 547-5584 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or the Cove Police Department after hours at (254) 547-8222.
In the event of a possible exposure, residents should also contact their physicians and veterinarians.
