An East Waco resident’s attempt to smoke out a snake set an old, hollow tree on fire Monday.

Waco firefighters responded just before 3 p.m. to the 1000 block of Preston Street where they found the fire burning inside the rotting tree.

Firefighters had to use a ladder in order to blast water down into the tree in order to extinguish the flames, which took about an hour.

The fire drove off the snake, but the resident has a bigger problem to solve, now.

The fire did further damage to the already weakened tree.

Fire officials advised the resident to have the tree removed professionally before it comes down on its own.
