'Scholarship Lady' not letting COVID-19 keep local seniors from college
With many high school seniors finishing the school year from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, College and Career Transition Coordinator Karen Denney, also known as "the scholarship lady" with Killeen ISD, is taking the challenge head on.
"I actually have a COVID-19 web page that I created," she said.
"Once the schools closed, I was worried about the students. I wanted them to have a place for resources."
The website offers links to many resources including scholarships, career tips, virtual college tours and study tips for exams like the ASVAB or SAT.
"The web page has study material links because this is a great time for them to be studying if they plan to take those exams."
Anyone without internet access can also contact a career advice hotline. The hotline is open every Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Denney says even outside office hours, no matter the day, she's happy to help the graduating class of 2020.
"I'm excited because I get to do what I love which is helping students," she said.
"There are a lot of questions that students have and if I can help them, by all means, I want to."
Anyone interested in contacting the hotline can call (254)-340-0321.
