GATESVILLE, Texas (KWTX) Jackie Samuel Crouch, 55, whom rescuers pulled from the rain-swollen Leon River Wednesday evening, was behind bars Thursday after authorities determined he was named in an outstanding arrest warrant.

Crouch was held without bond in the Coryell County Jail.

Crouch was the focus of a search that stretched through the afternoon Wednesday after a woman reported that waded into the rushing river in Fauntleroy Park and disappeared.

At one point a drone and a helicopter were involved in the search effort.

A crew in a boat pulled Crouch out of the water Wednesday evening.

The man apparently was trying to find a place to cross the river, Gatesville Police Chief Nathan Gohlke said.

“He could not find a place to cross upstream, so he came back downstream and into the park, where he saw law enforcement sitting across (the river),” Gohlke said.

Gohlke estimated that the level of the river is about six feet higher than normal that said it was continuing to rise.

Crouch could also be cited for crossing a barricade, because the park was closed when he entered it, Gohlke said.
