Send-off planned as Lady Bears head to Final Four
Fans are invited to send-off the Baylor Lady Bears as they head to the Final Four in Tampa Tuesday afternoon.
The gathering will be at 3:30 p.m. in front of the practice facility in the Ferrell Center parking lot.
The send-off comes on the heels of a whirlwind 24-hours for the top ranked team in the nation.
The team won the Elite Eight in North Carolina Monday night, arrived back to Waco in the early morning hours Tuesday and spent a few hours packing before departing for the Final Four in Florida.
“I literally put my head on the pillow at 4:02 a.m. to be exact and was up at 7:30,” head coach Kim Mulkey said. “But it's a good kind of tired. It’s a happy kind of tired.”
Mulkey and the Lady Bears advanced to the semi-finals after winning Monday night in dominating fashion defeating Iowa 85-53.
Mulkey, who won a national championship as a head coach at Baylor in both 2005 and 2012, says each trip to the Final Four is special particularly for those experiencing it for a first time.
“There is nothing like the very first time and that's what excites me as a coach when I see players getting to experience it for the first time,” Mulkey said.
Mulkey says her team will be prepared for the big match-up Friday against a team she calls a “very, very good Oregon team.”
“It’s sweet,” Mulkey said. “That's why you coach is that you want to play in a Final Four and try to win a national championship.”
